Rigby Reardon is a private detective in Raymond Chandler style - street-smart, tough and with good instincts. One day new case arrives to his office together with beautiful Juliet Forrest, daughter of a scientist, who died in the accident. Before his death Professor Forrest worked on some secret project and had an obsession on making lists of names of people, but his daughter does not know why. Reardon takes the case keeping in mind the golden rule - never fall in love with a client. In professor’s office he finds two lists, one titled "Friends of Carlotta" and the other "Enemies of Carlotta", but he can’t figure out what does it mean. He seeks help of his loyal partner, Phillip Marlowe (in that part the late Humphrey Bogart). The investigation is in full swing and Reardon is almost positive... that he actually fell in love with Juliet.
Unusual idea for a movie - the scenes from old crime or mystery movies were used and linked together using black and white scenes filmed in modern times. That way the main character can communicate with Phillip Marlowe played by Humphrey Bogart, or with the villains played by Kirk Douglas or Vincent Price. But the old and new scenes were put together in a way that the whole actually make sense and it is a complete crime story. The whole project was very well executed and is loads of fun with comic talent of Steve Martin and superb dialogues that involve actors already deceased in a way that they make sense... but slightly different sense. A must see movie!
