Oskar Werner

Austrian actor

Born Oskar Josef Schliessmayer he started his acting career in Vienna when he was teenager. His career was soon interrupted when he was forced to join Wehrmacht and serve in German army during the World War 2. He feigned incompetence, so he was assigned to kitchen duties. Close the end of the war he deserted and hid in the Vienna Woods with his wife and daughter. They all had to hide from both the Russians and Germans after the city was shelled.

His post war career included such remarkable films as Fahrenheit 451, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Shoes of the Fisherman.
