Polish film director and screenwriter. In the years 1948-1968 he was a lecturer
at the Lodz Film School - his pupils included Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski. In 1969 he emigrated from Polish: first to
Israel, then to Germany, then to Denmark, at the end of the United States. He died by suicide. Best known as director: Knights of the Teutonic Order (1961), Border Street (1948), Five Boys from Barska Street (1954).
