Warmed-Over Krautrock (2020, United States)
Essential Music, a small indie record store in Los Angeles, is not doing great lately, the number of customers coming in is shrinking, but for Duane, young employee enjoys mostly the atmosphere of this place. Together with Lysette and Chris they spend most of the time discussing music and dealing with personal matters, since there is not much work to go around. Owner of Essential Music, Walt, is as passionate about the music as he was years ago when he established the shop, but now he has to deal with quite different problems than in the past. Regularly he puts on better clothes and disappear from the shop for a while, which begins to intrigue his employees, who begin to speculate if he is having an affair somewhere. Duane, just like most of the customers of the shop, begins to fall in love with Lysette, Chris is a lead singer for Troubled Meats, a band he is convinced that is on a verge of becoming a hit, but Walt is dealing with more down-to-earth matters. His disappearances coincide with his visits to several different financial institutions, hoping to find a way to keep the shop afloat.
Warmed-Over Krautrock, itself an indie movie about an indie record shop, is a surprisingly warm story about dealing with what life puts in front of you and sticking to your passion even when the whole world around you seems to be moving forward and leaving you behind. On surface it is a bit sentimental story, but underneath you can find an interesting look at how to deal with an end of something you really cared about without turning it into a vigil.
