In 1986 in Gyunggi province of South Korea, police finds the body of a young woman, who was raped and strangled in the ditch next to a rice field. The local police starts the murder investigation, but discovery of a second body strongly suggests they might be facing a serial killer. The experienced officer Park from Seoul takes over the investigation, but when none of the standard procedures produce effects, he tries to find a new way of finding the identity of the killer. With the number of the victims growing and fear growing among the public, Park is under pressure to find the killer. Lack of hard evidence is pushing him towards the methods that are on a verge of being legal or within police regulations.

Film based on the real events of a serial killer, known as Hwaseong Strangler, who was active in South Korea in the 1980s and early 1990s. While based on a true story, Memories of Murder is a gripping thriller showing with what kind of pressure the police officers must deal while looking for a serial killer - frustration with leads that head nowhere, lack of material evidence, lack of suspects and the local people, who rely on them to bring back safety they once enjoyed in the province. All of this leaves a mark on their consciousness, a burden they much carry while the number of victims is growing. The story, the atmosphere, the great performances from the cast - all of it put together made Memories of Murder a masterpiece. It is a gripping crime story, a thriller, but also a showcase of what may happen when the pressure is getting too much to handle.

Trivia about Memories of Murder

The killer inentified

In 2019 the real Hwaseong Strangler was identified through DNA match as Lee Choon-jae, who was at that time serving life sentence for rape and murder of his sister-in-law. Later Lee confessed to murders and attacks on women in Hwaseong and nearby areas, however due to statute of limitations he could not be prosecuted for those crimes.
