This Is Spinal Tap 1984 review film review

This Is Spinal Tap (1984, United States)
English rock band Spinal Tap sets out to tour the United States to promote their new album, Smell the Glove. Unfortunately they are not at the best place right now, their fame has faded, their manager is struggling to sell the tickets for the concerts, they have problems with travelling and the accommodation, but also there is some tension between the band members. Nigel Tufnel, who wrote most of their songs, and David St. Hubbins, the lead singer, are childhood friends and long-time collaborators, but lately they were having problems with their vision of the band and the future. While some of the concerts are being cancelled due to low ticket sales, the venues they do perform in are usually quite small, the budget is quite limited, so they cannot put up the shows on the scale they used to. And then, David comes up with a brilliant idea - he wants his girlfriend Jeanine to join them on tour, which irritates Nigel, but that is just the beginning of their problems.
American comedy built in a form of mockumentary, showing the life of a touring band, their ups and downs... but mostly downs. When they struggle with chasing the fading fame, the tensions between long-time friends and collaborators arise and stirs their already uneasy reality. On surface, it is just a piece of comedy, but a well devised script and good cast of comedians turned this simple story into a long-time classic. Why This Is Spinal Tap reached such popularity? It is hard to explain, as a comedy it is not a laugh-out-loud fest, it is not serious enough to be a comedy-drama, yet the characters and the situations will stick with you for years.
