During the World War 2 German navy had two great battleships called Bismarck and Tirpitz that were most advanced warships of their times. Since Kriegsmarine had very limited number of ships, comparing to Royal Navy, the main purpose for those battleship were the raids on the merchant ships and thus cutting off United Kingdom from supplies. Bismarck was first to enter service, armed with eight 380mm guns and displacement of 50,000 tonnes it was a power that British had to take seriously. Battleship left Gdynia on the night of 19 May 1941 and joined by heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen begun the first war patrol. British headquarters received informations that both German warships were spotted leaving the Skagerrak straits and obviously they are heading towards North Atlantic, where they can freely operate and attack llied convoys. Captain Jonathan Shepard takes over command of the Royal Navy operations just in time to face one of he deadliest opponents - the mighty Bismarck. Shepard sends all the best British warships that are available, including HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Hood, but just few minutes after engaging the enemy HMS Hood is blown up by a single salvo from Bismarck.
Good war film, one of the best naval battle films, although small parts of the plot are not based on the facts - film was made before all the secrets surrounding breaking the code of Enigma were made public, also involvment of the destroyers in the hunt for Bismarck are not exactly accurate. But beside that it is great movie made wih great realism, especially taking under consideration that the creators had no CGI technology.
