Solomon Joel Cohen - born 8 May 1913 in Johannesburg, died 26 April 1976 - South African actor of Jewish origin, popular mainly in the UK, where he lived and worked from 1946 until his death. In his youth, he took up various jobs: a diamond engraver, hairdresser, dance instructor, he also took part in competitive boxing. During World War II he joined the army ZPA, officers received cuts and was taken to a branch composed of artists in uniform, designed to provide soldiers fighting entertainment. Best known for Bless This House, Hancock’s Half Hour, Citizen James, The Lavender Hill Mob.
